Strong Connections

About the Program

Strong Connections–Powerful Futures is a culturally informed, non-traditional therapeutic affinity space that creates opportunities for connection and skill-building. We serve BIPOC families, with a primary—though not exclusive—focus on African American and East African immigrant and refugee families.

Culturally Rooted Facilitation

SCPF is led by passionate facilitators who, through their lived and professional experiences, are skilled in navigating the complexity of intergenerational relationships. Our facilitators bring firsthand knowledge of cultural nuances, language, and experience to their work with families.

Core Program Components

SCPF includes three main components designed to support youth and caregivers:

1. Educational Workshops

These psychoeducational sessions include both instructional and supportive elements. Workshops are often offered in families’ first languages whenever possible, as well as in English. Topics have included:

  • Communication
  • Adolescent development
  • Mental health
  • Understanding trauma
  • Parenting
  • The impact of domestic violence

2. Facilitated Family Dinners

Family dinners are a powerful way to reduce social isolation and build community. Parents and youth prepare and share meals together, followed by structured conversations. These dinners create safe spaces for:

  • Sharing stories and lived experiences
  • Strengthening relational bonds
  • Increasing parental understanding of their adolescents’ cultural experiences
  • Reducing intergenerational and cultural divides

3. Interactive Family Activities

Hands-on activities help build trust, joy, and deeper connections between caregivers and youth. Examples of past events include:

  • Zoo and Aquarium trips
  • Movie outings
  • Cultural hair braiding
  • Soccer games
  • Cultural storytelling
  • Painting and pottery workshops
